Grown-Up Girlfriends: Finding and Keeping Real Friends in the Real World (Focus on the Family)

So it seems that I will be taking a one-day adventure out to Western Pennsylvania with my dear friend, Elizabeth, and her two children. You see, her husband's grandmother is dying and wants to see the little ones (one of whom she hasn't met since he was born 9 months ago) before she passes away. With both of our husbands working, I volunteered to go along for the 6 hour drive each way to help with the kids and just spend time with my friend. I'm really looking forward to our little road trip and sharing all of those hours in a car with her and the kiddos. Call me crazy, but in my mind this is what a friend does.

We have joked with our husbands that we just needed a good illustration for the Bible study we do with college girls every week as we're working through the book Grown-Up Girlfriends. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend reading it and yes, this trip will fit perfectly into an illustration about the importance of having those "grown-up girlfriends" in your lives.

  • Just when I thought  life was back to normal (both of us healthy, no eye infections for 3 plus weeks), I had to go and total my car on Wednesday...yes, my "new to me" Volvo that we just got in November.  Needless to say, even though I was fine (and I credit the Lord and my husband's prayers with that) it was scary, I was shaken up, and we're on the search for a new car.  I must say, I'm thankful that Jarrod works for the family business where there is always an extra truck around and I'm thankful his mom felt it best to add me to the company insurance a year ago so I can drive Jarrod's truck while I am without a car.  One wouldn't think that rearending someone would cause $5,000 plus of damage, but FYI: hitting a practically parked SUV on an on ramp (yes, it was my fault- raining, short, bad on ramp, looked to merge and foot came off break...either way you look at it...my fault) is like hitting a steel wall.  One little black scratch of paint on her bumper, the previously stated damages to mine.  However, I know the Lord was protecting me that day.  Jarrod had left for work around 5:30 am that morning (accident happened at 7:00 am) and felt that the Lord was laying me on his heart and preceded to pray for my safety his entire way to Harrisburg (about 35 minutes).  I'm also so thankful that I have a team at school who was willing to make sure I was okay, offer hugs when I was a wreck (yes, adrenaline kicked in and I drove myself to school right after it happened- for all of you teachers out there, you know it's easier to do this then to create sub plans on the spot), and even offer to pick me up for school in the mornings.  If for this reason alone, I know I'm at SES for a reason!  Thank you, Lord, for your provision and protection in our lives.  In the words of my husband, "The car can be replaced.  You cannot."

  • I decided to post again...I know what is the world coming to...two posts in a 3 week span of time!??!  Life in good old York is pretty much the same...after my last post I finally went to my eye doctor who prescribed the "right" drops though I still seem to be suffering from some "dry eye" symptoms, but I guess I'll know more after my follow-up visit tomorrow.  That said, I feel very blessed that the one thing the public school system does well is take care of its teachers through their health care benefits.  Fortunately, all of these visits have fallen under medical!  (since we joined my insurance during open enrollment, we won't have vision coverage until the fall).  One of the many things we have to be thankful for.  For now, everyone is healthy in the Snyder household- after each having a nasty cold, each having a version of some sort of stomach bug, and each having eye infections (me 3 times over), this is something to be thankful for as well.  Hope all of you out there in cyber space (does anyone even read this anymore?) are staying germ-free.

  • Well, one may wonder what I'm doing home in the middle of the day on a school day.  See, it seems that the walking petri dishes I teach (aka my husband's loving name for my students) have either given me new germs or I never shook them from my system.  After being on two different sets of drops, battling two eye infections (presumably pink eye), having no symptoms for a week, and finally putting my contacts back in- I woke up with my left eye glued shut this morning.  So I'm at home and I have an appointment with the eye doctor this afternoon to figure this junk out and hopefully remove the eye gunk FOREVER!

I feel as if we have been hit hard with the sickness this year, but I guess new buildings have new germs.  Jarrod and I will celebrate 10 months of marriage this week and while the ride has sometimes been a bumpy one, we are madly in love with each other and are looking forward to year 2.  I have been told by someone that the first year of marriage is "good," but the second is "great!"  We're looking forward to the "great" part and now that we have made so many adjustments (moving, new job for me, etc), we're in a good place to enjoy our lives together.

  • So, I'm just not good at keeping up with xanga entries since life is just plain busy, but I"m going to try in a nut shell to update you on my first months of marriage.  Exactly on our one-month anniversary (May 14), I woke up to our power being off...and of course my alarm had not gone off so I was half an hour behind schedule.  Well, add to the fact that I now need to figure out how to manually open the garage door (remember power is out)...Jarrod told me via phone how to do it, but I didn't know you're suppose to go back in the garage to shut the door...yes, some of you are painfully guessing what happened next.  I tried to close the garage door from the outside and to make a long story short I smashed my ring finger on my left hand (yes, the finger where my beautiful wedding bad had coincided with my engagement ring for one short month- don't worry, we got my rings off before swelling and they're both fine) and ended up with a trip to the emergency room where it was discovered that I had a broken finger tip and needed 4 stitches in my nailbed.  I like to live on the edge...what can I say?  So, it was a painful 1-month anniversary, however, my very sensitive husband brought home my favorite kind of wine, but made sure to get the alcohol-free kind because I was on Vicodin for my pain...I LOVE HIM SO MUCH!!

I finished off the school year on June 15th and packed up everything that I have accumulated in the past 2 years of teaching- this took two trips with my car and one trip with one of the trucks from the ice plant-way too much junk!  However, the good news in all of this is that (borrowing some paperwork that needs to get wrapped up) I have a job at North Hills Elementary School (Central York School District) teaching 4th grade.  Truly, the Lord is faithful.  I hope that I would have been able to say that even if I did not have a job, but waiting and interviewing was trying.  This is 15 minutes from our home instead of the hour- hour and 15 minutes I was driving EACH WAY every day.

We are now in the busiest part of the summer in the ice business and this means that I take on a new role as a wife.  I still do everything I normally do, but making sure my husband is well-rested and well-fed becomes even more crucial...and it also means that I will go to work with him for about a week during the week of Fourth of July to help wherever he needs me (answer phones, make him coffee, clean his office, run the dock if needed) and just be the support system he needs.  Though summer can be very stressful, Jarrod's aunt took the time to sit down with me and share her wisdom (Jarrod's uncle runs the main business) of being the wife of an ice man during the dog days of summer.  She gave me wonderful suggestions and I'm so thankful for her wisdom.  I'm learning each day that while marriage means sacrifice, it is also the most rewarding experience I have ever encountered.  The Lord continues to bring us closer to Him each day and I can't wait to see what lies ahead.  I know the Lord has BIG plans for Jarrod and I, but right now I couldn't begin to tell you what they may be or where they may take us.

8 days until the 4th of July

    12 days until VBS begins

    13 days until Camp Inventions
